From 1st April 2022, the UK is introducing a new tax on all plastic packaging that is manufactured and imported and does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic. Producers or importers of any plastic packaging that does not contain enough recycled plastic will have to pay a tax of £200 per tonne of plastic in order to reduce the use of virgin plastics.
The scope of packaging included is broad and also includes single use waste containers. As such clinical waste bags, sealed units and sharps bins will all be impacted by the tax. The impact will vary according to the weight of the bin, but it is likely to add somewhere in the region of 30p to a typical 60L clinical waste bin.
As such G&N have been working on supplying an alternative to their customers which will contain more than 30% recycled plastic and therefore not be subject to this tax that will begin being enforced on 1st April. Typically, clinical waste & sharps bins made from recycled plastic are grey due to the recycling process, however, G&N are able to supply yellow units and coloured lids that will be unaffected by plastic tax in accordance to the HTM 07-01 waste stream colour coding system.
