OxiTop-IDS B 6 Measurement System for Soil Respiration

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is an important measurement parameter for anyone discharging effluent or running a waste water treatment plant. It is a difficult test to run and there are very few resources online which help new users get to grips with the technique.

 
Camlab offer a range of different analysis options for BOD to suit all types of user. The options are outlined below; from traditional bottle and multi-meter based set ups to bespoke all in one systems. Camlab can offer both demonstrations and advice to new and existing users, which will allow them to get the best results from this difficult analysis.

Multi-Meter Based

Ideal for single BOD sample analysis along with the ability to measure other parameter analysis (pH, ISE etc.). Camlab supplies several options from market leaders.

Lovibond BD 600 Series

The BD 600 is a respirometric system for the determination of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). The BD600 is equipped with an automatic start feature, measurement does not start until the temperature in the samples is the same as that in the thermostatically controlled cabinet. The system comes with all you need for analysis of 1-6 samples.

WTW Oxitop System

The unique feature of this system is that the heads contain the sensor and a measuring unit for independent setting and recording allowing a more flexible system. Options include:

Both bespoke systems have an extensive selection of accessories which includes their own brown glass flasks, overflow measuring flasks, stirring unit and reagents such as nitrification inhibitor and potassium hydroxide solution 45%. A thermostatic cabinet is an additional consideration.

SI Analytics produces a number of meters, titrators, and other instrumentation to enable user-friendly accurate testing systems for on-site analysis.

COD and Ammonia Measurements 

Multi analysis instrumentation such as the WTW® pHotoFlex® TURB handheld photometer can provide an array of photometric data such as COD and ammonia for waterways and ponds in addition to the ability to measure pH and turbidity in a single meter.

Real-Time Measurement of Reactor Alkalinity

A key measurement within the process itself is the FOS/TAC (alkalinity ratio). The acid vs alkaline ratio in the system helps to assess the risk of acidification in the biogas reactor. FOS/TAC can be assessed through titration.  The SI Analytics TitroLine® 5000 auto-titrator, contains a built-in FOS/TAC method simplifying the titration for daily analysis of the fermentation performance. Monitoring this ratio is important in preventing underperformance due to an imbalance of feedstock load (too much or too little) which can result in the need to restart the whole process – a costly procedure. Another method for optimizing performance is monitoring the bio-methane potential (BMP) of the various feedstock samples by simulating conditions to that of the fermenter (i.e. pH, temperature, pressure) over a period of 21 to 28 day.  One system to do this is the OxiTop® Control respiratory system. This system mimics the fermentation process providing data to enable process control and optimization for the varying feedstocks. Uniquely, these OxiTop measuring heads are designed for the biogas industry as they withstand corrosion caused by hydrogen sulphide production.
