This test is in accordance to the ISO 15705:2002.
ISO method: The chemical oxygen demand of water is determined by silver-catalyzed oxidation with potassium dichromate / sulfuric acid at 150 °C during a two hour period.
Benefits:This Test is suitable for short time COD at 160°C within 30 minutes.
In contrast to the conditions described in the ISO 15705, the short time COD is characterised by a higher digestion temperature and reduced reaction time. Therefore we recommend comparing the results of the short time COD from time to time with measurements made under the conditions of ISO 15705 (150 ± 5°C / 2h ± 10 min).
Benefits of NANOCOLORtube tests in comparison to ISO 6060:
The new ISO 15705 is based on the same chemical reaction as the established ISO 6060. The water contents are oxidized by sulfuric acid and potassium dichromate in the presence of silver sulfate and mercury(II) sulfate. Compared with the ISO 6060, the new method, described in the ISO 15705 has significant advantages:

If the chloride content exceeds 1500 mg/L the sample has to be diluted with COD-free water, or you may use the chloride complexing agent. Lower chloride concentrations are masked by the mercury(II) sulfate present in the test tubes.

Can I buy chemicals as a private individual?
The majority of chemicals can be purchased by private individuals but there are a number of products which are restricted for a number of reasons. These include Hazardous chemicals, weapon and drug precursor chemicals and other restricted chemicals.
What's the process for buying Chemicals?
Business User - You should have an account with Camlab so we can verify your status, for online purchases you need to be registered on the website against that business account and logged in. For hazardous and restricted chemicals you may need to undergo an additional check. To facilitate this you should provide a company number when making a purchase. New companies or sole traders may need to provide additional proof of a trading business to ensure we can fulfil your delivery.

Are Camlab chemicals suitable for clinical or other medicinal use?
Camlab supply chemicals for laboratory use only, they are not suitable or recommended for any other use.

The sample should be thoroughly mixed or homogenized in a blender to be as representative as possible for the COD of the water to be examined.
COD determinations should be performed as soon as possible after sampling. If this is not possible, the pH should be reduced to 2 or less by the addition of 2 mL of concentrated sulphuric acid H2SO4 per 1 L of sample.
Storage of the acidified sample at room temperature: Analysis within 7 days.
Storage of the acidified sample at 4 °C: Analysis within 28 days.
Rapid decomposition is not possible for all COD tests. Depending on the composition of the test, the water content can be higher. This results in a higher vapour pressure during the decomposition and increases the risk for bursting of the test tube. For more information about decomposition, please see the respective instruction leaflet.
PHP (potassium hydrogen phthalate) is used as a reference substance.
NANOCOLOR COD tube tests have advantages over the German norm DIN 38409-H41 in terms of use of toxic chemical compounds and user-friendly handling. Furthermore, seven NANOCOLOR COD tests meet the requirements of the DIN ISO 15705:2002 standard.
For cumulative parameters, the sample must not be filtered prior to decomposition! By filtration, compounds which are poorly soluble are removed. Those compounds would thereby escape the detection which would lead to wrong results.
For a determination of dissolved COD, filtration of turbid samples using the membrane filtration kit 0.45 µm (REF 91650 / 91652) or glass fibre paper MN 85/90 BF is recommended. These filters are tested and validated specifically for this purpose.
Seawater suitability
Seawater analysis is generally not possible because of chloride interferences.
