As successors to the popular Centrifuge 5424/5424 R, these two new models include everything you loved about the previous models, plus new rotors and software functions to make your everyday work more efficient and enjoyable.

The improved cooling system of the Centrifuge 5425 R ensures optimal separation results and reliable cooling at 4 °C, even at maximum rotor speed. With a short pre-cooling time of only 8 minutes (~21 °C to 4 °C), the centrifuge is ready for operation when you are.

The 6 different rotors now cover an even wider range of applications, including molecular biology applications such as DNA/RNA or protein purification in 1.5 or 2.0 mL tubes or spin columns, pelleting of bacteria, yeast and cell cultures in 5 mL tubes, and microvolume protocols such as pre/post PCR and qPCR setups in 0.2 mL tubes, 8-well strips or divisible 96-well plates.

IVD vs GLP

The GLP Eppendorf centrifuge is part of the general lab products range and is suitable for most applications.

Centrifuges with IVD certification are registered as an in vitro diagnostic medical device under the IVD Directive 98/79/EC in Europe. If your lab is involved in clinical work, then you should consider getting a centrifgue with this certification. Having this certification may come at a price premium.

Rotor Nomenclature

Rotors come in two formats - Swing out and Fixed angle. The Eppendorf nomenclature explained so you know exactly what you're getting with each rotor model.

Eppendorf centrifuges are packed full of numerous features (not all features are present in all centrifuges) and here we explain exactly what the terminology means.

Optibowl: Quiet operation due to the design of the centrifuge bowl.
QuickLock: Simple half turn to close rotor lid, making for more ergonomic operation.
Soft-touch: The main centrifuge lid can be closed using just one finger of pressure.
FastTemp: Fast pre-cooling before a temperature sensitive run.
FastTemp pro: Programmable pre-cooling i.e. in the morning before the customer arrives in the lab.
ECO Power: Shut-off engages after 8 hours of non-use.

Eppendorf offers a variety of products complying to the IVD Directive 98/79/EC. If your lab work is predominantly a medical, clinical or diagnostic application, an IVD compliant product should be used. If your lab work is rather research oriented, a General Lab Product (GLP) should be used.

Functionally, the products are the same, however the IVD compliant product has a number of additional pieces of documentation and analysis to meet the requirements of 98/79/EC including:

Risk analysis procedures
Interaction with authorities
(Post) market surveillance
Additional labeling requirements (CE-marking according to 98/79/EC)

For the above reasons, the IVD-compliant products usually fall at a slightly higher price point.
